Due to overwhelming demand (Jimmy the Kid asked when we were going to start the TnTT) and now that Jake’s back in town and it’s about time we got motivated, we’re going to start the TnTT for this season on next Tuesday, the 14th of April. As mentioned in a previous post we have a new and exciting location. We’re going to be using John Anderson (the one in both Flagler and Volusia counties).
The details
The start/finish line will be about 1/4 mile south of 100 (Moody Blvd) on John Anderson at the entrance to the Stonebridge Subdivision (west side of road). From there the course runs south on John Anderson to the turnaround point (and back, of course).
The turnaround point (TA) is south of the county line and (according to Google Earth) .38 mile north of the 90 degree corner at the south end of John Anderson. The actual TA is the driveway with the eight white post/columns on the east side of the road. It is immediately past the 30 mph sign visible on the southbound leg. It is also distinguishable by being at the southern end of a relatively open area on the east side of the road (while the west side of the road is wooded). The official distance is 8.55 miles (this has been corrected to 8.62 miles).
About the TA
Keep in mind that this is a public road with traffic (and lots of squirrels this time of year) and we don’t have a spotter at the TA – You are responsible for not endangering yourself and other riders at the turnaround.
Some reference points. The point where it first becomes wooded on both sides of the road south of the county line is .37 mile (and about 1 minute) from the TA. And where it becomes relatively open on the east side of the road (while still wooded on the west) is around .18 mile (and about 30 seconds) from the TA.
Between those two points, you want to do a traffic check (cars, trucks, bikes, squirrels, buzzards, etc) and start planning your TA. Do not attempt to pass another cyclist within the last 100 yards before the TA. If you’re passing another cyclist within the last 1/4 mile before the TA let them know you’re coming.
The first cyclist will start at 5:30 PM (this will change to 6:00 as the days get longer). Starts will be at one minute intervals. And starting order is in typical TT start sequence (slowest first, fastest last) irregardless of sex. Speed will be based on last year’s results or, in the case of a new rider, their anticipated average speed (or lacking that, they’ll start first). There is parking available at the park on the north side of 100 a short distance east of John Anderson. While staging be sure not to block the entrance to Stonebridge.
Just for reference, the fastest times this season will probably be sub-19 minutes. Nineteen minutes is almost exactly 27 mph (yeah, sure, we planned it that way). Some other time/speeds:
20 minutes — 25.65 mph
21′ — 24.43 mph
22′ — 23.32 mph
23′ — 22.30 mph
24′ — 21.38 mph
25′ — 20.52 mph
26′ — 19.73 mph
27′ — 19.00 mph
Be sure to check in with Timer Tom well before 5:30. This course is currently on a test basis. If people don’t like it, we’ll change (don’t know where, but we’ll change).
I’m hurtin’ just thinking about this.
M
